Chan Centre Presents

Buika/Lila Downs

Sun Nov 07 2010 8pm
Chan Shun Concert Hall

With only two other North American presentations – at Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Hall and at Chicago Symphony Hall – you won’t want to miss this mesmerizing double-bill at the Chan Centre featuring two of the most powerful artists on the world music scene today in a tribute to the legendary ranchera vocalist Chavela Vargas.

Raised in a gypsy neighborhood on the Spanish island of Mallorca by parents who came to Spain as political exiles from Equatorial Guinea — multidimensional vocalist Buika is extraordinary. She is at the crossroads of many genres — a place where jazz, funk, flamenco, copla and neo-soul come together in a sublime, musical pact.

For over a decade, Lila Downs has traversed the planet, bringing her dramatic and highly unique reinvention of traditional Mexican music and original compositions to spellbound audiences of all cultures and countries. Her virtuosic style mixes blues and boleros, jazz and opera, gospel and hip-hop, and corridos and cumbias. She has long been recognized by the music industry, receiving a Latin Grammy for the 2004 release “Una Sangre” and a Grammy nomination for 2008’s “Shake Away.”

Watch a video of Lila Downs as she explains and sings the Ranchero style.
