Chan Centre Connects

Pre-show Talk with Dr. Alejandra Bronfman

Thu Oct 01 2015 7:15pm
Royal Bank Cinema

Presented by the Chan Centre

This pre-concert talk entitled “Musical Lives and the Sounds of Cuban History” will revolve around the lives of three musicians as they witnessed and participated in Cuba’s tumultuous pre and post revolutionary eras.

Music and history are always in conversation, and musicians’ work and lives can speak to the vagaries of Cuba’s past, and the ironies of its present. They are the living hope of its future.

Dr. Alejandra Bronfman is Associate Professor in the Department of History at UBC, where she studies and teaches courses in the social and cultural history of the Caribbean. Her research considers the creation of media circuits in the early 20th century with particular attention to imperial dynamics and changing political practices, and the relevance of sound and listening to modes of affiliation and belonging.

This free event is for Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club ticket holders only. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
