Ricardo García is a UBC graduate student from the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies. He currently holds a scholarship from the Tina and Morris Wagner Foundation, and his area of study includes the literary, geographical, and political practices of Northern Mexico.
In this pre-show talk, García will be discussing the way in which female identity and empowerment is negotiated within Mexican music, with a special focus on mariachi and the legacy of Aida Cuevas. He will also be looking at the role Juan Gabriel has played in the history of Mexican music, and the significance of the relationship between Cuevas and Gabriel.
