The Robert and Ellen Silverman Piano Concerto Competition at UBC brings together UBC’s best and brightest young pianists in competition for an opportunity to perform with the UBC Chamber Orchestra.
About the Patrons
Robert Silverman was a faculty member at the University of British Columbia for thirty years. He served a five-year term as Director of the School of Music in the 1990s, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2004. In 2013 he was appointed to the Order of Canada. A long-standing Steinway artist, he is frequently heard on the CBC and has recorded for EMI, Stereophile, Marquis Classics, OrpheumMasters and Isomike.
A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, pianist Ellen Silverman also holds a Master’s degree from Syracuse University. She was the Coordinator of the Piano Department at Douglas College for 32 years, and has served on the summer faculty of UBC. She also maintains an active private studio in Vancouver, and has adjudicated virtually every music festival in the province. She has released a CD, Contemporary Music for Trumpet and Piano, with trumpet player Ed Lewis.
