The World Plays Here: A Letter from Joyce Hinton
Celebrating the Chan Centre at 20.
Throughout the Chan Centre’s history, artists from all corners of the globe have set foot on our stage to share a piece of themselves, and their music, with Vancouver audiences. In this 2017/18 series in celebration of our 20th anniversary, we are so pleased to be welcoming exceptional performers from Canada, England, Ireland, India, the U.S., South Africa, Mexico, Cuba, and Australia. Familiar and fresh faces, unique and memorable collaborations, established and emerging artists−we invite you to experience cultures from all over the world, right here in the warm and intimate acoustics of the Chan Shun Concert Hall.
In 1997, the Chan Centre was made possible through an incredible gift to the University of British Columbia from Tom and Caleb Chan and their family. Since then, this building has been many things to many people: a prominent stage for top-tier musicians and public intellectuals touring the world; a home for local performance ensembles; a beautiful venue in the UBC Arts and Culture District for the School of Music and Department of Theatre and Film; a special place for graduating students; and most especially, a sanctuary for audiences and art lovers of all kinds.
We want to express our gratitude to the Chan family for the years of transformational experiences that their gift enabled, and acknowledge the visionary architecture of the late Bing Thom. In Bing’s words, “Each time you come to a building, it’s like a good book or a good piece of music; it doesn’t matter that you read or hear it ten times, twenty times or more. Each time you discover it in a fresh way.” Fellow Co-Managing Director Cam McGill and I warmly invite you to rediscover the Chan Centre during this celebratory season.
Here’s to 20 more years!
