SOLD OUT: Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu – Piano
Presented by The Vancouver Chopin Society
Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu, the first Canadian to win the gold medal at the prestigious International Chopin Competition, will perform an all-Chopin recital at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday, February, 20th, 2022 at 2 p.m. The Vancouver Chopin Society is proud of Vancouver being the only North American city included in Liu’s prizewinner’s international tour. Born in Paris in 1997, Liu moved to Montreal with his parents at age six, and is a graduate of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, where he studied under Richard Raymond. He was also a student of pianist Dang Thai Son, himself a gold medalist at the 1980 Chopin Competition. Throughout the competition, Liu was the clear audience favourite, receiving standing ovations for his third-round and final-round performances from the Warsaw audience. In an emotional statement after the announcement, Liu said, “I’m truly honored for this award, of course, and for this jury’s trust and for all the warmth I have received in recent days.” A record number of 500 young pianists applied for this year’s competition, of which 87 were selected for the first round, which makes Liu’s win an even more remarkable achievement.
