Axiom Brass – Limitless
An Artistic and Scientific Exploration of our Place on Planet Earth
In collaboration with the UBC School of Music, and the
Dept. of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences
As part of its 25th-anniversary celebration, the UBC Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) is partnering with the UBC School of Music (SoM) to explore Planet Earth through the lens of science and art. Through this collaboration, they will explore the challenges facing Earth’s environment, using music as a vehicle to ignite conversation.
Axiom Brass, a Chicago-based brass quintet as a catalyst for this collaboration between EOAS and the SoM. This 2-day residency includes a performance of Limitless, a live multimedia concert exploring the connection between human existence and the furthest reaches of the cosmos. With original compositions and transcriptions, paired with stunning visuals and reactive sound-to-video effects, Limitless is an engaging, immersive show that ventures beyond the traditional boundaries of the concert hall. For this performance, the musicians will partner with Earth Scientists from EOAS to examine critical themes of climate change, mineral resources and planetary exploration through short presentations and visual materials that showcase the wonder and complexity of Earth and planetary science phenomena.
Axiom Brass
Described as “exceptional ambassadors for classical music” and “innovative programmers” Axiom Brass designs concert experiences for audiences that stretch the imagination and expand sensibilities. Their concert programs regularly pair newer works by composers like Christopher Rouse, Augusta Read Thomas, and Evan Williams with traditional works by Barbara Strozzi and rousing tangos by Piazzolla. With multimedia performances and live reactive sound-to-video effects, the ensemble creates an engaging, immersive experience that ventures beyond the traditional boundaries of the concert hall. Axiom has presented concerts all over the world, including the Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Gallo Center for the Arts in California, Shenzhen Concert Hall in China, and Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis in Portugal. The only brass ensemble to ever win the Fischoff Educator Award, Axiom creates custom-tailored workshops and residency activities for presenters and their communities. The group’s commitment to education and their interactive teaching style has led to residencies at the Grand Tetons Music Festival and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, as well as being featured as ensemble-in-residence for the National Brass Symposium. Axiom Brass performs exclusively on Mutec Mutes.
