Gordon Grdina’s Haram to Open for Makaya McCraven
"A love and investment in Arabic music has leavened and expanded his already broad jazz chops... These performances are marked by a fiery spontaneity and charged group interplay."
Chicago Reader
Vancouver legend Gordon Grdina brings his Haram band to open for Makaya McCraven at the Chan Centre on Saturday, October 15 at 8PM!
JUNO-winner Gordon Grdina formed Haram in 2008 as a large ensemble vehicle to interpret classic Arabic repertoire. These pieces are reinterpreted with an ensemble half studied in the tradition and half in avant-garde improvisation, giving Haram its unique sound.
The time-tested pieces are made anew by the ensemble mixing elements of noise, electronic soundscape, and free improvisation. The music has developed to the state of effortless cohesion mixed with wild abandon, a perfect complement to Makaya McCraven’s own innovative sound. Gordon Grdina is “one of Canada’s most prolific jazz musicians” and Haram will bring together seven instrumentalists, with special guest, bassist Trevor Dunn.
Trevor Dunn was born in 1968 and began to focus on the electric bass at age 13, and four years later co-founded the avant-rock band Mr. Bungle. Dunn has lived in Brooklyn, NY since 2000 and can be heard on over 150 recordings
