Summer Camp Volunteer Opportunities

Are you interested in music, digital media, and STEM, and enjoy working with children? Join the Summer Camp team at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and help support creative, hands-on camps that explore music through digital media and STEM.

Our Summer Camps provide a fun, inclusive, and collaborative environment where children ages 5–12 learn, create, and express themselves — and where volunteers gain valuable experience in arts and STEM education, leadership, and teamwork.

Volunteer Camp Assistant Role

Volunteer Camp Assistants support instructors and staff in delivering full- and half-day summer camps. Under the guidance of Camp Leaders, volunteers help ensure a safe, positive, and engaging experience for all campers.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with activity set-up, facilitation, and clean-up
  • Supporting campers throughout the day
  • Helping lead games and group activities
  • Contributing to a welcoming, inclusive camp environment
  • Collaborating with staff and fellow volunteers

 

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is ideal for individuals who:

  • Are 15 years of age or older
  • Can commit to at least one full week of camp (multiple weeks preferred)
  • Enjoy working with children ages 5–12
  • Are enthusiastic, patient, and responsible
  • Are eager to learn and able to take initiative
  • Have an interest in music, digital media, and/or STEM
  • Prior knowledge of the following is highly desired and beneficial, but a willingness to learn is equally appreciated:
    • GarageBand and/or digital music composition or production
    • Scratch or comparable icon-based coding languages or computer programming (Press Start, Harmony Hackers)
    • Stop Motion Studio or comparable stop-motion animation apps (Cue the Music, Cue the Music Jr.)
    • Ukulele or guitar (Cue the Music, Melody Makers)

 

Time Commitment

  • Camps run: July 6 – August 14, 2026
  • Typical hours: 8:45am – 4:15pm, Monday to Friday
  • Minimum availability: 1 week (2+ weeks if preferred)
  • Training: 4–6 hours of in-person training in mid-to-late June

Specific camp assignments and schedules will be confirmed during the application process.

 

Important Dates

  • Application period: April 6 – May 4, 2026
  • Group interviews: Week of May 11, 2026
  • Volunteer training: Weeks of June 15 and June 22, 2026
  • Camps in session: July 6 – August 14, 2026

 

Additional Information

All successful applicants must complete a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening prior to the start of camp.
