In 1802, Beethoven was overcome with depression as the irreversible nature of his deafness became undeniable. He wrote a “testament” to this fact, ending it with the insinuation he would end his life. Myth has it he then arose from his desk and launched into creating the passion and triumph of the Eroica Symphony.
