Chan Centre Presents

Chucho Valdés Quartet

Fri Nov 02 2012 8pm
Chan Shun Concert Hall

Hailed as “the Dean of Latin jazz” and “one of the world’s great virtuosic pianists” by the New York Times, multi-Grammy Award-winner Chucho Valdés has recorded over 80 albums. With a long-reaching history in developing Afro-Cuban jazz, he is revered throughout the international jazz community.

Valdés’ inventive style melds his diverse interests: classical, jazz, bop, Cuban and swing, combined with his superb dexterity on the piano. Perhaps best known for founding the influential Latin jazz band Irakere in 1972, Valdés continues to push his own musical boundaries yet remains beautifully consistent in his style.

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1941, he has performed for over 50 years with his own bands and with countless jazz luminaries including Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie and Chick Corea.

Joining Valdés for this performance will be John Benitez, bass; Horacio Hernandez, drums; and Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo, percussion.
