Join our UBC Music students in two concerts that celebrate Chamber Music and Art Song! Once a year students from all the performance divisions of the School of Music gather for a joyous celebration of the collaborative realms of Chamber Music and Art Song.

Preparing a musical score for performance is a journey filled with interpretative puzzles and uncertainties. Chamber groups make thousands of communal micro and macro decisions, without a conductor or designated leader. Together, musicians aspire to co-create a inspired experience for their listeners. It’s a complicated, beautiful negotiation process that combines many paths into meta-insights. When all the strands coalesce, souls can soar in a shared space of sound, imagination, emotion, vision, and transformation.

2PM: Mixed Chamber Music
Ineffable Encounters Played Into Air

will run from 2-5 pm and will feature wonderful works for small ensembles, including lots of Brahms, Dvořák, Poulenc, Schubert, and more! Featuring UBC students from Strings, Piano, Opera, Voice, Winds, Brass, and Percussion.

You’re invited to join us for a “come for some or stay for a lot” drop-in concert.  It’s a fabulous mash-up of movements of wonderful works for Percussion ensembles, string quartets, a tuba/trombone duet, a lyrical piece by Poulenc for oboe and piano,  Vaughan William’s beautiful meditation on folksongs. Mozart’s iconic clarinet quintet, Brahms, Brahms, Brahms for piano with strings and Dvorak’s glorious piano quintet.

The full programme is listed below with approximate timings to help you with your planning. Some minor changes may be required.

8PM: New Art Songs
Stories Painted Upon the Air

will run from 8-10 pm, with a number of world premieres and commentaries by student composers. This evening of musical storytelling will feature UBC students in Opera, Voice and Piano, with special guest vocal artist, Sarah Jo Kirsch.

Art song composers: Adam Isidto, Kelk Jeffery, Fergus Kwan, Vivian Kwok, Pallas Loredo, Mark Marinic, Jackson Poling, Aidan Redulla, Hope Salmonson, Jingchen (Alina) Zhang, Patrick Zhu

Art Song is a unique  multi-media performance form. Its poetry speaks of elusive thoughts and feelings. In a magical fusion of powerful words with music’s sound language, the world’s ancient and current stories are sung and played into visceral presence – felt and understood by one’s totality of being. Shared in concert, we are immersed in expressions of the human journey – triumphs and losses, hopes and dreams, and, of course, Love!
