Inspired at the Chan kicks off with a delightful afternoon of Disney songs
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts invites all the aspiring Elsas and Simbas to come out on Sunday, October 27 at 3PM for Musical Magic: Disney Edition. This whimsical concert is the first of the Chan Centre’s family-friendly programming, Inspired at the Chan. Six local singers accompanied by a pianist will perform crowd favourites such as The Little Mermaid’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” Mulan’s “Reflection” and Aladdin’s “A Whole New World,” culminating in a finale sing-along. Guests of all ages are highly encouraged to wear costumes.
“The Inspired series is such a fun branch of our programming and I love seeing young children engaging in the performing arts. My own children are well beyond the age of trick-or-treating, so I am particularly excited to see our hall full of princes, princesses and other playful characters.”
Pat Carrabré, Chan Centre Director
All of the performers are UBC School of Music alumni. Anja Kelly recently earned her Bachelor’s and is a current member of musica intima and Intertidal Choral Ensemble. Born in Mexico City, Pablo Romero completed his Master’s Degree from the UBC School of Music following his Bachelor’s from the Universidad Panamericana. William Grossman is also a Master’s alumna and performs regularly with the Vancouver Opera. Kathleen Isaza is currently pursuing her Master’s and recently performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and as a soloist at Salt Spring Island’s Bach on the Rock festival. Erika Pryor will complete her Master’s this year and performs as a guest soloist at St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Victoria. Emerging talent Denise Chung is completing her Bachelor’s and is a member of the University Singers.
Risa Tonita, currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts at the UBC School of Music, will accompany all singers on the piano. A finalist at the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Piano Competition, Risa maintains a private piano and voice studio.
Patrons can also add on a $5 pre-show workshop to learn how to exercise and strengthen their voices in warmups led by the performers.
More concerts for the Inspired series will be announced later this season, including the return of the annual Youth Talent Show as part of Kids Take Over UBC and Carnival of the Animals Reimagined.
