Remembering Bing Thom

It was with great sadness that we received the news that renowned Chan Centre architect Bing Thom had passed away at the age of 75.

Chan Centre Co-Managing Director Cameron McGill shares these words:

“Bing Thom’s passing is a huge loss first and foremost for his family and friends, but also for a much wider community including those of us here at UBC and across Vancouver whose lives have been touched by the beautiful, inspired spaces he worked his entire life to create. Bing was delighted every time he came to an event at the Chan Centre or had the opportunity to show the building to colleagues or prospective clients. His pride in what he was able to accomplish here in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia was evident and extremely well deserved.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bing for over 20 years and he was truly a joy to work with. He has left us a tremendous legacy in the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and throughout this entire building we see reflected Bing’s love of nature, his passion for and understanding of music and the arts, and of course his architectural brilliance. To describe him as a visionary in his field seems inadequate. He was, in my experience, always looking forward but was respectful of the past in his never ending effort to reimagine what architecture could and should be.

We shall miss him.”
