Rhiannon Giddens, Grammy and Pulitzer-winner, to perform April 15

Vancouver, BC — The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia is thrilled to present the venerated singer-songwriter Rhiannon Giddens for the Chan Centre Presents series on Monday, April 15 at 7PM. This performance is in support of her new album, You’re the One, due on August 18.

“Rhiannon isn’t just a remarkable songwriter. She’s a once-in-a-generation talent that has made it her mission to sing for the voiceless and to reclaim the deep African-American legacies and traditions at the roots of folk and country music. In her banjo and fiddle-playing hands, she excavates the past. With her powerful voice, she transforms it into something beautiful and undeniable, no matter how ugly the history may be. Rhiannon’s music overflows with heartfelt ancestral connections, and I can’t wait to welcome her to the Chan.”

You’re the One is Giddens’ third solo album and her first of all-original songs. The 12 tracks burst with a life-affirming energy that match her electrifying vocals. The album features a variety of instruments including Cajun and piano accordions, Miami horns, and a string section, reflecting the inclusive spirit of her music. Giddens expressed that she hopes listeners “just hear American music,” with its blend of blues, jazz, Cajun, country, gospel, and rock.

Giddens is one of the most multi-talented and prolific artists living today. Hailed as “one of the most important musical minds currently walking the planet” by American Songwriter, she is a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient; formed the Grammy-winning Black fiddle band Carolina Chocolate Drops; won a Pulitzer this year for the opera Omar which she wrote with Jordan Peele’s go-to composer, Michael Abels; wrote and performed for the Red Dead Redemption II soundtrack, one of the top-selling video games of all time; acted on the TV show Nashville; and published children’s books.

She continues to build upon her impressive accomplishments as the current Artistic Director of the intercultural ensemble Silkroad, taking over from Yo-Yo Ma. She also hosts a PBS radio show and a WQXR radio podcast, earning her a well-deserved spot on NPR’s “25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century” list.

Her first Vancouver performance since 2017, tickets to see Rhiannon Giddens go on sale to the general public on August 17 at 10AM. Fan pre-sale opens on August 16 at 7AM. Fans can sign up to be notified via Seated when tickets go on sale by clicking here.
