Youth Programs

The Chan Centre strives to create programming to both inspire and reflect our community. Artistic experiences are too often restricted to those with substantial financial resources or family traditions of attendance. We aim to make the arts accessible for all youth so they see music as something they can participate in — as audience members or as performers.

Chan Centre Youth Pass

The Chan Centre Youth Pass was developed in 2022 to provide inspiring — possibly life-changing — arts experiences for young people.

With generous support from Chan Family Foundation and Heritage Canada, this program provides 50 tickets for each Chan Presents concert to selected young people, and their companions, who might not otherwise be able to attend events at the Chan Centre. Their performance experience includes social and educational components related to the concerts, such as pre-concert materials, discussion group activities, and an opportunity to network with peers and meet artists. These experiences are delivered by UBC student mentors and are designed to build comfort with attending performances and encourage repeat attendance.

Roots & Shoots World Music Program

The Roots and Shoots Program is a music education outreach program run by the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts for under-resourced Vancouver area elementary schools. The program offers children from a broad range of socio-economic realities and backgrounds rare opportunities to experience world music and learn about the diverse cultures from performing artists. The program engages up to six schools each year, offering a concert held in the Chan Centre as well as six hours of workshops held in each school.
