David Kaplan

“Quasi una fantasia,” meaning “like a fantasy,” is a solo piano program exploring the intersection between composition and improvisation. It features two works recently written for David by Christopher Cerrone and Anthony Cheung, in which each composer took inspiration from one another’s piano concertos. These two arresting and powerful pieces, which each explore elements of improvisation, are interwoven with fantasy-form music by Mozart and Kaija Saariaho, culminating in Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2, subtitled… you guessed it: “quasi una fantasia.” The artist will be providing short improvisations which will serve as connective tissue between the works.
