- Wednesday Noon Hours
- David Kaplan
This program involves three interrelated commissions by Christopher Cerrone, Anthony Cheung, and Andrea Casarrubios, around which I’ve developed a “quasi una fantasia” program theme, featuring almost-improvised works connected and interspersed with actually-improvised preludes and transitions. Other music includes Schumann, Saariaho, Ligeti, Couperin, Brahms, Beethoven and more.
There are a number new commissions by underrepresented composers, and the under-explored concept of improvisation in the classical genre is presented via music from all periods.
The other program he could present is his New Dances of the League of David, which combines Davidsbündlertänze with a dozen or so miniatures by Sam Adams, Caroline Shaw, Timo Andres, Augusta Read Thomas, and others. Each piece interacts with the original Schumann in a unique way, and the length of the overall suite can be tailored to anything from 40-60 min., depending on how many are included.
