One of the most influential and celebrated artists in contemporary music, two-time Academy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla brings his celebrated musical universe to the Chan Centre. The Argentinian composer, producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has spent more than five decades reshaping the global sound of Latin music, film, television, and video games.
Rooted in Latin American folk traditions and defined by the evocative sound of the ronroco, an Andean stringed instrument, Santaolalla’s unmistakable musical voice has become a signature of his work. Despite having no formal training to read or write music, over five decades, he has become the de facto composer for powerful, haunting, soundscapes evoking poignant beauty and human vulnerability. From Brokeback Mountain and Babel to the video game and TV adaptation of The Last of Us, his compositions have become essential to some of contemporary culture’s most memorable stories.
For this concert, Santaolalla celebrates Ronroco, his landmark album that transformed his career, alongside selections from his acclaimed scores. With an exceptional band of multi-instrumentalists, experience the intimate, emotional sound of one of Latin America’s greatest living artists.
