Directed by Monica Hugget
The original 1724 version
March 21 is Bach’s Birthday.
J.S. Bach’s two surviving settings of the Passion story are pillars of Western art music. The emotional intensity and directness of Bach’s setting of St. John the Evangelist’s text has been the subject of much musicological discussion in recent years. As she did for her Grammy-nominated recording of Bach’s Orchestral Suites, Monica Huggett will re-examine the original, more intimate scoring of this work, dating from 1724.
We welcome the return to Vancouver of Monica Huggett, one of the world’s leading baroque interpreters who has been a frequent guest artist in Vancouver from very early in her career.
Joining the Portland Baroque Orchestra for its first Canadian appearance will be the Montreal-based vocal ensemble Les Voix Baroques, well-known to Vancouver audiences for its many appearances at the Vancouver Early Music Festival in recent years.
