Lila Downs
With rich theatricality, vibrant grace, and a powerful social conscience, Lila Downs is both a citizen of the world and a celebrant of her Indigenous culture. The Los Angeles Times says, “the Mexican American singer has a stunning voice; a confident multicultural vision grounded in her Mixtec roots.” But, most importantly, she is a singer and composer of astonishing originality, melding traditional Mexican music with blues, jazz, hip-hop, boleros, rock, and many other genres into a singular contemporary whole.
Her vocal prowess and adventurous blending of musical styles have earned her numerous accolades over her distinguished career including a Grammy and five Latin Grammys, including the 2017 award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal. Downs has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious festivals and venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Festival of Sacred Music. In addition to receiving an invitation to sing at the White House, she has also performed at the Academy Awards. Lila Downs will be celebrating the release of her brand new album, Salon Lágrimas y Deseo, with this highly anticipated return to the Chan Centre.
