Celebrate 65 years with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada!

For this special performance, the orchestra performs music that reflects on our turbulent times. Ethel Smyth’s Overtures to the Wreckers opens the concert. On a trip to the Isles of Scilly, Smyth visited Piper’s Hole, a coastal cave that in the 1800s, locals used to lure ships into to plunder their treasures. This became the inspiration for her opera, The Wreckers, a story of love, violence, and betrayal.

Claude Debussy’s La mer follows, evoking the sea’s mercurial, boundless, and ever-changing nature.

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 closes the night as a triumph against tyranny. Written after the death of Stalin, the monumental work depicts the horrors of the Stalin years and ends with the composer’s victory over the brutal regime.

Featuring 91 of this country’s most gifted young musicians—including local talent from Vancouver and the West Coast—this concert is a showcase of the next generation of classical musicians. Support the future of classical music in Canada with the National Youth Orchestra!
