Café Buenos Aires: Jose Franch-Ballester & Friends
A vibrant and transportive night of music, dance, and words—this is Café Buenos Aires!
Tango classics by the likes of Horacio Salgán, Julián Plaza, and Mariano Mores are interwoven with scene-setting readings of Latin literary giants such as Borges and Neruda, and set in electrifying motion by a pair of masterful dancers. The result is a textured immersion in the world of Argentine tango, inspired by the liveliest Buenos Aires cabarets.
Through solos, duos, and ensemble pieces, acclaimed clarinetist and UBC Music faculty member Jose Franch-Ballester’s program highlights the considerable talents of violinist Cameron Wilson, pianist Amanda Chan, guitarist Itamar Erez, and bassist Noah Reitman, and showcases the “clarinetango” style in playful partnership between Franch-Ballester’s clarinet and the bandoneon of arranger Douglas Schmidt. Ambassadors and epitomizers of the form, the Argentinian-born Roxana and Fabian Belmonte are beautifully emotive tango dancers who have performed and taught internationally for more than three decades. Fresh, faithful, and absorbing, Café Buenos Aires celebrates the finest Argentinian tango.
